Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese footballer who currently plays for Real Madrid in Spain and represents Portugal at national level as the team's captain. Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo, was born on the 5th of February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira (Portugal). He began his professional career with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal but his talent was soon recognised by many of Europe's elite clubs all wanting to capture his signature.
As a junior, Ronaldo played for Andorinha for two years and soon made a move to more competitive football when he was snapped up by CD Nacional. In 1997, his move to a much higher level was confirmed when Sporting Lisbon captured his signature. His progression with the Portuguese team was rapid and in 2003, Ronaldo's rise to fame was meteoric. Sporting were opening a new stadium and to mark the event, hosted Manchester United in a friendly match. The players of Manchester United were reportedly so impressed by Cristiano's talent, they urged manager Alex Ferguson to swoop for him. This soon became a reality and Manchester United came to an agreement with the Portuguese side to lure their promising talent to England for 15 million EUROS, or 12.24 million pounds. Ronaldo was eased into English football, much more physical than in other European countries, and it wasn't long before Ronaldo (or CR7 as he was known after taking David Beckham's famous number 7 shirt) became a household name.
Ronaldo's first honour with Manchester United was the FA Cup in his second season. Ronaldo's career with Manchester United was sensational and his partnership with Wayne Rooney had other clubs in Europe fearing the prospect of facing the Red Devils. Ronaldo's personal highlight with Manchester United was being crowned as the Ballon d'Or in 2008, a title he has yet to re-capture after Lionel Messi won the accolade in 2009-2011. Cristiano made no secret of the fact that he wanted to play in Spain and soon his dream move would be realised after Real Madrid made their intentions to sign the world's best player clear. The move happened in 2009 for a world-record transfer fee of 80 million pounds (94 million EUROS). Cristiano reportedly earns 12 million EUROS a year with the Spanish giants and has won several major personal and team accolades including the Golden Boot and La Liga. Cristiano recently got his 100th cap for Portugal at senior level, becoming the third youngest player at 27 years of age to reach such a feat. He is also the first football player in the world to surpass 50 million likes on Facebook.com.

Brad Pitt

One of the hottest men in Hollywood, this Oklahoma-born blond appeared in a handful of TV-movies and guest spots before becoming an overnight sensation with his sexy supporting turn as a robber in Thelma & Louise in 1991. Pitt graduated to leading roles in the Western Legends of the Fall and the bloodsucking blockbuster Interview with a Vampire, both in 1994, prompting People magazine to crown him the Sexiest Man Alive the next year. Fearing the label would limit his career, Pitt took on intense, often offbeat roles that proved he was more than just a pretty boy, such as a mentally unstable animal-rights activist in 12 Monkeys (which earned him an Oscar nod) and the leader of an underground society in Fight Club. Pitt was again voted People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2000. Finally ready to embrace his hunk status, Pitt played a suave criminal in Ocean's Eleven and a stunning shirtless warrior in Troy. He was more often in the spotlight thanks to his high-profile romances, including broken engagements to actresses Juliette Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow, and a seemingly perfect marriage to Jennifer Aniston that ended in 2005. She filed for divorce after rumors circulated that he had taken up with his Mr. & Mrs. Smith costar Angelina Jolie. In 2006, after months of tabloid coverage of "Brangelina" flying around the globe fighting for human rights and adopting children, the couple revealed that Jolie was pregnant with Pitt's child. Pitt became the adoptive father of Jolie's children Maddox and Zahara four months before daughter Shiloh was born in May. Their brood continued to expand with the adoption of Pax in 2007 and the birth of twins Vivienne and Knox in 2008. The family has since traveled the globe together, devoting much of their time and money to humanitarian and refugee-relief efforts.

Angelina Jolie

There is no more famous or enigmatic actress alive today. And her latest biographer, Andrew Morton, knows what it takes to be world famous after writing about the lives of Princess Diana and Tom Cruise, among others. Morton set his sights on Jolie and has produced this just-released, unauthorized 313-page biography. Of course, Angie’s lived a very public life so while Morton’s bio isn’t full of unknown details, there are more than a few revelations to keep you flipping the pages. Here’s our take on a few of the most intriguing insights of the book.
What’s in a Name?
Angelina Jolie was almost born Shiloh Baptist Voight. The inspiration for the name was a truck her father, Jon Voight, and her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, were stuck behind while taking a drive through the woods. (Marche, as Marcheline was known, shot it down, thinking it was “too Hebrew.”) It’s a charmingly insignificant story, considering the symbolic weight names carry for the rest of the biography. Marche gave Angelina the middle name of Jolie and James, her son, the middle name of Haven, thinking they would drop their surnames to go into show business. Ironically, “Voight” probably would have opened doors for Angelina, but Morton says she dropped it in order to succeed on her own merits, a plan her mother foiled by secretly calling agents to tell them Angelina was the daughter of Jon Voight. Later, during a nadir in Angelina’s relationship with her father, she had “Voight” legally struck from her name. But then after years of freezing out her father, she named her daughter Shiloh.
Growing Pains
Angelina had a troubled childhood, the result of growing up with an estranged and famous father and a mother who, despite her laissez-faire parenting style, used her daughter as a vehicle through which to live out her own dreams of stardom. For the first year or so of Jolie’s life, she was kept in a white office five floors above her mother's apartment and tended by a rotation of babysitters (her mother finding her too similar-looking to her just-run-off husband), and then at 14 she was given the run of the master bedroom along with her live-in boyfriend. The idea was that her mother could keep a better eye on the couple that way. As Morton says, this didn't quite work out: "While she thought her liberal behavior meant that she would be able to keep an eye on them, the proximity of the master bedroom to the street made it easy for them to sneak out at night, which they did regularly." (76)
Girl, Interrupted… And Interrupted
Her unorthodox family situation took a psychological toll, as Morton points out. He sets a bevy of psychoanalysts speculating on the psychic damage, none of whom have ever analyzed Jolie or her family. Their diagnosis? That "Angelina Jolie will have experienced profound abandonment, anxiety, and may have experienced depression" (36). To these issues, they attribute most of her behavior, like suicidal thoughts, obsessive crushes, drug use, desire to act, bisexuality, exhibitionism, and kinky proclivities. Or was her astrological sign to blame? Morton contents that her being a Gemini explains a lot—"As a Gemini, the child was destined to have a dual personality, the forces of good and evil, darkness and light, male and female, wrestling with her psyche" (30)—with the help at one point of Princess Di's astrologer (188). Whatever her affliction, she started dressing in black and wearing studded dog collars, which got her mocked in school, and for a time, she aspired to be a funeral director. Less innocuously, Morton claims she started doing some pretty heavy drugs, including coke and heroin.
Sling Blade
Part of her Goth phase involved acquiring an impressive array of swords. "She enjoyed not only their cold, unforgiving beauty and the intriguing stories they suggested, but also the thrill of holding, spinning, and throwing them. Knives, often decorated with ornate symbolism, stained with honor and battle, excited and inspired the collector in her." (63) This, too, one of Morton's army of psychoanalysts attributes to her "the emptiness where the connection to the self is missing." At 14, she used one of these knives to cut and be cut by her live-in boyfriend, and later to cut herself. In 1991, when she was busy fleshing out her theatrical résumé, she channeled her love of blades into the healthier hobby of fencing.
